The “Enfant terrible” from Italian dance, Francesca Pennini revisits Maria Taglioni’s La Sylphide and Michel Fokine’s Les Sylphides, two emblems of romantic ballet. Set to a bewildering live mix, a post-punk–techno-pop parade full of creatures laughing off codes and genres brings the sylph (“la sylphide”) to its demise. Then, as with the necrophagous beetle of the Silphidae family, Pennini extracts a new nymph from the “death” of a codification of the seemingly unchanging classical dance, that her daring vision revives. On stage, thrilling and contagious exaltation, formidable punch, refined sensuality, and technical perfection go from tradition to transgression.
