About to become Prime Minister, Martha Heiger, leader of the Parti du Réveil Populaire (Popular Awakening Party), goes back to her native island, Tristesses, to bury her mother who was found dead in suspicious circumstances. The candidate takes advantage of her village’s morose situation to build the basis of a propaganda project. In the shadows, two teenagers decide to take up arms… In tune with the times, Anne-Cécile Vandalem dissects humorously dissects one of the most fearsome weapons of modern politics: the saddening of people. This hybrid work takes us on a journey between opera, ghostly detective fiction and Shakespearean drama, in a political fiction with a catastrophic and awfully possible scenario. A great work of art where humour embraces cruelty. “Tristesses” was awarded best 2016 show at the Prix de la Critique and welcomed with enthusiasm at the Festival d’Avignon.
