Any attempt will end in crushed bodies and shattered bones

In his most ambitious piece to date, Jan Martens examines dance from a political perspective and gives a voice to rebellious bodies. The title is taken from the words of Chinese president Xi Jinping during the Hong Kong protects of October 2019. The Belgian choreographer responds to the violence of the subject with an act of rebellion inspired by the global wave of uprisings, from the women’s marches in American and Chile to young climate activists, Black Lives Matter and the Yellow Vests. The cyclical choreography is punctuated by marches and moments of stillness that become tools for resistance. Sharp, dislocated moments characterise the unusual corps de ballet, which transcends generations and acts in a singular manner. They dance to protest songs by Kae Tempest and Max Roach and Abbey Lincoln and to a concerto by Polish composer Henryk Mikolaj Górecki. The seventeen performers encourage enthusiasm and awareness with their playful, romantic and unifying energy, which highlights protesting as a shared necessity.
