Myriam Muller gives us a powerful staging of Breaking the Waves. On a remote island, Bess, a young psychologically-fragile woman, enjoys a passionate relationship with Jan. But the latter, a victim of a serious accident, is paralysed. Bess is ready to do anything to save him. Jan asks her to continue to love, to find a lover and to tell him of her sexual pleasures. In a hostile social environment, Bess’ sacrifice provides a miraculous cure for Jan. Within this closed, sectarian and very religious universe – an allegory of the current European sociocultural environment – Jan appears as a threatening intruder. In a simple space, filled with images and sounds relevantly adapted to the subject, the actors embody, in goldsmiths, these characters infiltrated with strong and raw, real and intense feelings. A modern story of live and self-sacrifice.
