Elizabeth Costello – a fictional novelist appearing in the work of Nobel Prize-winning author John Maxwell Coetzee – is much more than just a literary character conjured by a mischievous writer.

She is Coetzee’s alter ego, his sword and shield: the one who speaks on his behalf and withstands the criticisms and anger of his readers and academic polemicists. She is the one who slips into his imagination and travels between the pages to talk to us about philosophy, the environment, social and existential questions, drawing our attention to the fate of animals, social injustice, the exclusion of the elderly, the disabled. Elizabeth Costello is free. She is the one who appears in texts that were never intended for her. She is like a ghost, a specter. Perhaps she is a dybbuk – that spirit from Jewish mythology that inhabits the body of an individual to whom it remains attached.

A recurring character in the work of Krzysztof Warlikowski, could Elizabeth Costello also be his dybbuk? But while she seems to haunt him almost as often as she does the writer who brought her to life, no play has ever been dedicated to her.

By dedicating a full-fledged performance to her, the master of Polish theater takes the logical step in a process whose magnitude he may not have anticipated when he granted her a place at the heart of his immense theatrical work.
