Fruit Tree finds its source material in 1923, in the choreography of Noces by Bronislava Nijinska. This ballet by Igor Stravinsky recounts the forced marriage of two Russian peasants by their families. Using the art of reinterpretation and poetic licence, Lara Barsacq takes this story and its symbolism and addresses femininity, rites of passage and the freedom of the body while dancing. The quartet of dancers asserts its voice through storytelling and polyphonic a capella singing, performs rituals in which hair flirts with and brushes against the roots of trees, farandole and wild movements, the sacrificed figure of the bride and the autonomy of bodies that have been liberated from the patriarchal yoke. Through this ceremony, in which joy is tinged with melancholy and sensuality, Lara Barsacq evokes the values of contemporary eco-feminism, urging us to take care of the living from this moment on.
