Performance created on October 9, 2025 at Théâtre de Liège

Composer, hymnographer, psalmist, poet, abbess… Kassia of Constantinople, also known as Kassia, is one of the earliest and most prolific creators of the Byzantine Empire. Born at the beginning of the 9th century into a wealthy family, she devoted most of her life to composing liturgical works, some of which are still sung today in Orthodox churches.

Following in the footsteps of her earlier creations inspired by great historical figures of dance and music, Lara Barsacq draws inspiration from this mythical personality, renowned for her formidable intelligence, to immerse us in a medieval aesthetic, inspired by the chants composed by Kassia, as well as the dances and paintings of that era.

Through this saintly figure and the legacy of her music, Lara Barsacq, with Kassia Undead, explores timeless themes such as mourning, martyrdom, dreamlike states, the passage of time, and melancholy, enveloping us in a strange sweetness.
