Composer, hymnographer, psalmist, poet, abbess… Kassia of Constantinople — also known as Kassiane or Kassiani — is one of the earliest and most prolific female creators of the Byzantine Empire. Born at the beginning of the 9th century, she devoted most of her life to composing liturgical works, some of whose hymns are still sung today in Orthodox churches.

Following in the footsteps of her earlier creations inspired by major historical figures of dance and music, Lara Barsacq brings Kassia’s spirit to the stage, immersing us in a medieval aesthetic at the crossroads of East and West. Through this saintly figure and the legacy of her music, Kassia Undead weaves together timeless themes — mourning, martyrdom, dreamlike visions, the passage of time, and melancholy — enveloping us in a strange, haunting softness.
