In a thirst for adventures celebrating revolts, joys, and fears, the diptych Écume explores what circulates from one being to another, from one generation to another, from one journey to another. With a heading, a questioning: Can destiny be chosen? And what do we do when we don’t like ours? What are our margins of action? Knokke-le-Zoute and Hofstade, parts of this duo, gently and humorously question social determinism.

On the edge of an artificial beach on the outskirts of a great capital – or perhaps on the cold sand of Knokke-le-Zoute – a strong-willed young woman faces her mother. At first glance, they look like two peas in a pod. And that doesn’t please her at all… After all, who enjoys being compared to their mother? Why do we always compare a child to their parent, but never a parent to their child?

As a future child begins to take shape in her belly, as a future road is destined, her mother announces the death of her father. A father she never knew, never even saw, yet who leaves her a double inheritance: ashes and money. 92,000 euros for 92,000 hugs never received, and an urn for an unknown story. Maybe she would like to start crying, but she won’t. She says tears might blur her vision…

Thus begins an initiatory journey by tram along the Belgian coast, from La Panne to Knokke-le-Zoute, in search of the ideal beach to scatter the ashes of an absent father, where the mist surrounding his story dissipates from stop to stop.
