Divinities of Greek and Roman mythology, nymphs have become known over the centuries in Western culture as the personification of beauty, and under the weight of the male artistic gaze, as that of desire and sexuality.

With La Grande Nymphe, Lara Barsacq – accompanied by Marta Capaccioli and Cate Hortl – takes back ownership of this mythical figure which has always been maintained by men, drawing inspiration from three works that forged this legend: the famous poem by Mallarmé, Afternoon of a Faun, Claude Debussy setting it to music, and its danced interpretation by Vaslav Nijinski in an erotic ballet that caused a scandal in 1912. Over an ’80s electronic musical sound, the duo transforms the stage into a space of emancipation, which has become the place for all bodies: free, ageing, joyful… unfettered by all social pressures, expressing the voice of all women through the voice of the Great Nymph.
