In March 1759, on the border between Norfolk and Suffolk in eastern England, as the whole country eagerly awaits the passage of Halley’s Comet, which is supposed to illuminate the sky with its immaculate light, Sally Poppy, a 21-year-old maid whose life has been nothing but poverty and misery, is accused and found guilty – along with her lover – of the atrocious murder of a young child.

When she announces that she is pregnant, which would commute her promised hanging to exile – an unborn child cannot be punished for the crimes of its mother – a jury of twelve women is convened behind closed doors to determine the truth of her claims. Locked in a cold room, these matrons of various ages and backgrounds, with conflicting profiles, debate, argue, quarrel, support each other, and unwittingly experience the power newly placed in their hands, in a society where only men dictate the law.

While outside the crowd becomes increasingly oppressive, clamoring for more blood under the windows of the court, these twelve women, torn between their daily duties, village quarrels, and personal criteria, try to deliver justice.
