Brecht’s most famous play, and a vibrant indictment against the follies of war, Mother Courage and Her Children tells the tragic fate of Anna Fierling, a traveling saleswoman who follows the armies to sell her goods during the Thirty Years’ War, a devastating European conflict between Catholics and Protestants.
Despite the dangers and death lurking all around her, Mère Courage tirelessly traverses the battlefields to sell food and drinks to the armies of both sides, whose terrible consequences become increasingly inevitable.
While Brecht saw in his character the epitome of opportunism, Lisaboa Houbrechts takes a fresh look at this complex and ambiguous woman with her new creation, simultaneously victim and perpetrator, smuggler and refugee, mother and merchant. For war is not only the concern of nations and peoples, it also rages within families and in the intimacy of the female body.
How does one live in times of war? How does one survive? As a child? As a young woman? As a mother? From these questions, the new prodigy of the Flemish stage stages the text of the German playwright with astonishing modernity, like an aesthetic, moving, and conflictual fable, on the vulnerability and resilience of women.
