Performance created on January 14, 2018 at Théâtre de Liège

The moutoufs.
That’s what they were called in the schoolyards.
The Moroccans.
Today, they laugh about it — but only today.
Especially since they are not truly moutoufs… at least, only half.
Their common point?
A Belgian mother and a Moroccan father.
Two parents, two identities.

Now adults, they have gathered to look back, with tenderness, on their journeys.
How on earth did they manage?
How does one become Belgian with a Moroccan father?
How does one feel Moroccan without even speaking Arabic?
They come to talk about their inherited anger, about the discomfort carried in their genes, about the racism they have ended up internalizing and digesting.
They confess their fear of forgetting, their anxiety about losing themselves.
They discuss hairy arms, exoticism, pure pork salami, diluted identity, couscous, foreskin, failed transmissions, tourism, religion, returning to their roots…
In short, they talk about their mixed lives.

And all five of them wonder:
“What will remain of our fathers?”
“And what will we pass on to our children?”
