Sous le volcan begins with a simple realisation: the world is rumbling. In the face of the broken bonds that once connected us to others and to the living world; in the face of the climate threat and the inequalities that divide our societies; in the midst of this political, ecological and social chaos – Leslie Mannès’ new creation questions our ability to bring forth what we have in common. How can we listen, cooperate, share?
With the hope of placing collectivity back at the centre, Sous le volcan stages communities – micro-societies where cooperation and mutual aid reign supreme – opening up new narratives to replace the endless competition of a world split between winners and losers.
Drawing inspiration from the imagery of volcanoes – destructive yet vital forces for life on Earth – Leslie Mannès choreographs on stage dances of passage, bridges between the visible and the invisible, which may perhaps herald the emergence of a new society united as one chorus.
