In this production of Tartuffe, Yves Beaunesne removes the main character from his role as imposter and fanatic, in order to depict a fascinating Casanova in search of the absolute. The play discusses the bewitching power that some people can exert, which cannot be resisted, even if they are likely to lead us astray. In Molière’s bitter story, we notice a hunger for life, both in Tartuffe and the family of Orgon, his host. Molière – whose 400th birthday is in 2022 – was a poet who was incapable of accepting existence as it appears. Something else emerges, like a crevice that gradually fills with light as it opens. Yves Beaunesne offers us a masterpiece that is fun and bursting with life!
