Since the beginnings of Greek civilization, women’s voices have only been subject to mockery, often considered superfluous – or even more brutally, as irritating – and constantly silenced by associations with monstrosity, disorder, and death.

Yet, from childhood, women’s voices were of paramount importance to Jan Martens. So, to pay tribute to these unknown voices, the Belgian choreographer – who had stirred crowds at the Avignon Festival with his sumptuous spectacle any attempt will end in crushed bodies and shattered bones, presented at the Théâtre de Liège in February 2023 – delves into the history of music to resurrect these graceful and powerful, unknown or forgotten voices, and shape an alternative canon.

In VOICE NOISE, six dancers confront recordings in which women’s voices unfold in different forms: humming, rocking, screaming, whispering, singing… Departing from the rhythm and exhaustion of his recent shows, Jan Martens creates a rupture in his work here with a piece attentive to detail and subtlety, thus generating new definitions of grace and elegance.
