Zouglou
Hippolyte Bohouo
- Duur: 60'
- Location : Centre Culturel d’Engis
In 1990, a roar sounded at the heart of the Yopougon university campus, a popular neighbourhood of the Ivorian capital, decrying the students’ impossible living conditions. In this way, zouglou, a hybrid genre between dance and singing emerged as the true artistic branch of the struggles led by the youth at that time. Filled with irony, through a series of entreaties, this movement denounced the hypocrisy of a government prepared to keep the people in submission to further its own interests.
In a hymn to the greatness of zouglou, which contains all social unrest and revolt, Hippolyte Bohouo channels his anger at injustice into a raging dance, with heavy and explosive movements, like an exorcism ready to free the forces buried in each of us, and give new impetus to the daily struggles of our existence.
