Théo Mercier & Steven Michel {Paris/Brussels}
In this piece, which won the Silver Lion at the Venice Biennale of Dance in 2019, visual artists and stage director Théo Mercier combines his knowledge with that of dancer and choreographer Steven Michel. The latter stages a hybrid creature that organises its place in life to the point of amalgamating it. The dancer seems to move in a “kit”, like the
décor, which comprises furniture from an iconic Swedish brand, a symbol of beauty for everyone. By translating a commercial system into a choreographic piece, the solo examines the standardised body, the imposed path and a certain illusion of freedom offered by the major commercial powers. Underscored by a text by Jonathan Drillet, this
performance tears apart the standardisation of modern man’s living space. It is an undefinable moment between the exposed body and stereotypical design, between farce and horror.
