At the invitation of Arts Over Borders, the designer of the Ulysses: European Odyssey project, which aims to artistically address the social and cultural themes explored in Joyce’s 18 episodes of Ulysses, Marco Martins takes on this unparalleled literary masterpiece, in which everyday life and the thoughts that continually fill our human minds are celebrated.

As a director and filmmaker with a long career of working with amateur actor communities, Marco Martins is interested in creative processes stemming from life experiences and individual stories to result in artistic works where these stories become everyone’s, resonating through an outcome that surpasses the sum of its parts.

Assigned the Lisbon chapter – Marco Martins’ hometown – set in a shelter, the Portuguese director logically decides to work with a non-professional troupe to create a play based on the stories of a group of young people living in foster homes, far from their families, to reinterpret this mythical 24-hour literary odyssey in the streets of Dublin.
