The Portuguese director Tiago Rodrigues makes Cristina Vidal – the actual prompter of the National Lisbon Theatre that he directs – the centre of his play Sopro (Breath). He imagines that, within the rubble of a collapsed theatre, only the prompter, the lungs of the theatre, has survived. Tiago Rodrigues pays stunning homage to the hidden figures of the theatre, whether they are behind the roles or the scenes. This gem of a play recalls to what extent the theatre is a living place of debate, meetings, pleasure, beauty and emotions, a place whose vital breath we must preserve far from the chaos of the world.
