To the east of present-day Belgium once lay the largest zinc mine on the Old Continent. Long coveted by the great European powers, the small enclave was declared neutral after the fall of Napoleon. For nearly a century, Neutral Moresnet embodied a European utopia ahead of its time, where people of all nationalities lived side by side in peace.
But the 20th century and its devastating wars shattered this dream. After a hundred years of prosperity and stability, the inhabitants of Moresnet once again became the object of everyone’s desire and changed nationality several times without ever moving. They did not cross borders: it was the borders that crossed them.
By taking on this unique story, the Irish company Dead Centre explores the notions of neutrality and the construction of identities, blending this political subject matter with their sharp humour, already evident in their previous shows (Le Silence, Good Sex…)
Today, as borders re-emerge, identities become more rigid and nations turn in on themselves, Dead Centre transforms the stage into what Moresnet once was: a neutral space, permeated by questions. For perhaps theatre – the ultimate territory without defined sovereignty – remains our last utopia…
