In May 1968, when Liliane and Paul met, the future seemed bright, their love ready to withstand the ravages of time, but fifty years later, disappointments have multiplied and dreams have been shattered.
In La Chambre de l’écrivain, we are now in 2021. Martin Langlois, their 45-year-old son, has become a director and sets out to tell the story of his parents’ troubled love affair. An unequal relationship, all too often based on power and domination. When he was younger, his father wrote a book inspired by his love affair with his mother, without ever telling her about it, without ever asking her opinion, and that book nearly drove her mad. Today, Liliane is 72 and cannot forgive her son for appropriating her story, just as his father did before him. Paul, meanwhile, is 80 and never leaves his nursing home room. Their conversations are disjointed, but he understands that his father is working on a final novel, intended to recount his origins.
Rehearsals for the show and tensions with his parents plunge Martin into a personal crisis. Plagued by insomnia, he spends his nights in the set of his show, where, one fine morning, a young technician discovers him. For hours on end, they discuss politics, love and art… but the young woman shakes Martin’s convictions to the core, to the point of making him doubt the very necessity of completing his production…
