Circus Baobab
Show premiered on 4 March 2022 at the Franco-Guinean Cultural Centre
Founded in 1998, the Circus Baobab collective brings together circus artists from Guinea and the diaspora. Together, they draw on the traditions of African circus — dizzying lifts, human pyramids, suspended leaps — to reinvent them in a contemporary style.
With their new production Yé!, they use spectacular dance to explore humanity’s inexhaustible capacity to make mistakes, to fail, to start again and to keep inventing. For in a world in ruins, it is always possible to imagine other ends of the world. Acrobats and dancers take us to the water’s edge—source of life and chaos—on a journey confronting the many environmental challenges of our time.
The body then becomes the vessel of will and resistance, of collapse and resilience. Inaction is no longer an option. We must act! The circus performers rely on one another: they flit several metres above the ground, like birds contemplating the sad world of men, and form human pyramids to reaffirm the power of the collective.
Conceived as an evocation of humanity’s defiance in the face of nature, Yé! also reminds us of all the poetry it holds within.
