SCENES FROM EUROPE
Premiere on 9 October 2026 at the Théâtres de la Ville de Luxembourg
Protassov is an idealistic scientist devoted to a visionary project: transcending the limits of humanity in order to establish a new society. Mired in his experiments and theoretical discussions with his artist and scientist friends, he remains deaf to the rumblings of revolt outside and the cholera epidemic ravaging the city. Cut off from the world, their lack of empathy and social awareness fuels growing tensions, both inside and outside the house…
Written by Maxim Gorky whilst imprisoned during the 1905 Russian Revolution, Children of the Sun ironically explores the role of intellectuals in our societies and our collective responsibilities in the face of societal crises. With her contemporary adaptation, Luxembourgish director Myriam Muller – surrounded by her trusted collaborators – transposes the plot to a shared flat of artists in a major city – never named – shaken by a popular uprising. The protagonists reflect, debate and clash over art and politics, yet remain disconnected from the social reality of the streets. Drawing on a timeless play, Myriam Muller offers a contemporary perspective on questions about the future that are more relevant than ever.
