As a snowstorm blankets the Belgian coast in a white blanket, the guests of a grand hotel in Ostend prepare to celebrate New Year’s Eve. Amidst the New Year’s bustle, a man walks in with his suitcase. His name is Minetti. He was once famous, the greatest of actors. But nobody recognises him anymore. He has come to meet a theatre director. He wants to perform King Lear – the role of his life – one last time.
Minetti waits. Time passes. And he reminisces about his past lives, chatting with those witnessing his wait… But in the lobby of this magnificent hotel, he is not the only one waiting: a young woman on a sofa, a fiancé at the bar, a pianist, a doorman watching the snow fall… Everyone is waiting for midnight… Everyone is waiting for something…
A famous play by the German writer Thomas Bernhard, Minetti is a wonderful tale of the passing of time, memory and ghosts, where the poignant and the grandiose, the tragic and the comic constantly rub shoulders. With his staging that gives pride of place to music and operatic singing, Matthieu Cruciani transcends the German playwright’s writing to draw out all its sensitivity.
