SCÈNES D’EUROPE
Show premiered on 2 October 2025 at the Comédie – CDN in Reims
England, February 1587. Mary Stuart, Queen of Scotland, imprisoned for eighteen years, is accused of plotting against Queen Elizabeth. Mary, a Catholic, poses a threat to Elizabeth’s Protestant reign, as some regard her as the rightful heir to the English throne. Mary seeks an audience with Elizabeth to plead her case. Elizabeth, torn between her duty as queen and her personal doubts, hesitates to order Mary’s execution, fearing it would tarnish her own image and provoke the wrath of European Catholics…
Written in 1800 by Friedrich von Schiller, Mary Stuart is a historical tragedy of formidable writing, but also a work of fiction in which the concrete and the poetic, romantic drama and political theatre, as well as a more philosophical reflection on the individual and freedom in the face of fate, religious fanaticism and reasons of state, all coexist.
Well-versed in great texts, Chloé Dabert (Racine’s Iphigenia, Lucy Kirkwood’s The Firmament) takes on Schiller’s breathless writing and continues her exploration of female characters trapped in a man’s world, delivering a masterfully constructed thriller on stage.
