The end of the world as we know it is nigh. Outside the venue, our cities are living out their final hours. There is no turning back. So, for one last evening before the collapse, the members of the Collectif Mensuel invite us to record, in their company, an audio time capsule engraved on a wax cylinder to bear witness, for the humans who will come after us, to the stories of those who resisted. Whether it’s a radio thriller about opposition to the construction of a giant dam in China, the epic slam poem of an activist perched in a redwood tree, the audio re-enactment of a zodiac assault on a whaling ship off the coast of Japan, or a tango leading to the greatest environmental trial of all time…
A world away from mourning, Capsule is a feverish performance, a festive and jubilant feat of craftsmanship: an ode to resistance, a sonic fireworks display paying tribute to the ecological, social and human struggles that sought to build a different world.
By conveying these tales of struggle with humour and lightness, the Collectif Mensuel once again instils – against all odds – the desire and energy to resist, to make the world more alive, more vibrant and more liveable. For optimism is – and must remain! – a guiding light.
