In an isolated house in the Japanese countryside, three sisters live in seclusion, commemorating the death of their father, a business executive and robotics engineer. Conversations stall, time drags on. They talk about this and that, as if to better stifle what really matters. Everything would seem ordinary in the Fukazawa household, were it not for the fact that humans and robots share their daily lives – or that one of the sisters, who died earlier, had been replaced by an android designed by their father. Only she seems to shed the pretences and speak with genuine sincerity, disrupting the apparent tranquillity of their existence.
In this android adaptation of The Three Sisters, Oriza Hirata transposes Chekhov into the near future, where the issues of transhumanism (cryogenics, cloning, robotics) and the virtualisation of experiences take centre stage. By choosing to cast actors in the roles of androids, director Jasmina Douieb creates a sense of unease and questions our tendency to distinguish between the living and the non-living, conscious beings and others, humans and the rest, and, beyond that, the power dynamics that have marked the course of history.
