“MAMI is not a project about my mother or my grandmother, but it is inspired by the strong relationships I have had with them and with the other women who raised me – because it just so happens that I have always been raised by women.”
As a child, Mario Banushi grew up with several mothers. When his biological mother was unable to provide for her children, she sent him and his two sisters to live with their grandmother in Albania. Later, when he moved with his mum to Athens, he lived above the bakery where she worked, and spent his childhood surrounded by women from all generations.
And so MAMI was created, as a tribute to all these women – to that maternal figure with a thousand faces: young, gentle, quick-tempered, nurturing, ageing… those mothers who look after us and those who need looking after.
On stage, Mario Banushi attempts to unravel the complex relationship between a mother – whoever she may be – and her child, a relationship that connects our lives to our roots… With performers of all ages and backgrounds, he creates a visual poem, a landscape of memory that we traverse together, each of us confronted with our own maternal memories and emotional heritage.
